About the award
The Royal Flemish Academy of Belgium and the Young Academy annually present the ‘science communication awards’ to scientists with exceptional achievements in science communication. The annual awards are presented to researchers who have worked intensively on a specific science communication project over the past two years.
The project: City Confessions
Danielle Fernandes has been awarded the Science Communication award for her project City Confessions, a participatory board game that raises awareness about sexual harassment in public spaces and builds skills for prevention. Co-designed with young people in collaboration with the researcher, practitioners from ZIJkant vzw, and game developers at De Aanstokerij, the game blends evidence from research on sexual harassment and bystander training with the lived experiences of a diverse group of young women.
The game externalises tacit knowledge, invites diverse lived experiences into the room, and builds collective skills for prevention- shifting the frame from individual risk management to community safety and care. The game is built on the principle that science communication is a two-way exchange: researchers share their expertise while continually learning from evidence and from participants’ lived knowledges.
Audience award
The Science Communication laureates can also win the EOS audience award, by winning a public vote. Support Danielle by voting on the EOS Website!
