Current societies are composed of citizens with a wide variety of identities and are marked by a wide variety of inequalities. Political issues related to ethnicity, race, gender, sexuality, religion or culture are often key ingredients of political concerns and conflicts. This course focuses on how politics and policy in contemporary Europe deal with diversity and plural inequalities. The main aim of the course is to provide theories and methodological tools to analyse the key issues related to discrimination and diversity. Theories regarding gender and diversity are central to the course, as well as European political and policy praxis. These are discussed in lectures and guest lectures by both researchers and political actors – such as, politicians/policy-makers and/or civil society organizations. The lectures are accompanied by discussions of scientific texts and policy documents. Students also write a response paper in which they address the theories and concepts elaborated during the (guest) lectures.
