Prof. Dr. Dirk Lafaut
Biography
Dr. Dirk is a member of RHEA, the Center of Expertise Gender, Diversity and Intersectionality, BIRMM, the Brussels Interdisciplinary Research centre on Migration and Minorities, and EtHu, the Center for Ethics and Humanism. His fields of interest and expertise are migration, care ethics and medical humanitarianism. Dirk is currently working as a post-doctoral researcher, amongst others on the IUC project between VLIR-UOS and MUST university. He is also appointed as guest-professor Contemporary Humanism till September 2024.
Dirk obtained his PhD in Philosophy and Ethics in 2021 with his doctoral thesis: ‘The ethics of bordering healthcare: A study on healthcare access of undocumented migrants in Brussels (Belgium). He worked as a PhD fellow of the Research Foundation Flanders (FWO). In his research Dirk uses both quantitative
and qualitative research methodologies, with a focus on the latter. Dirk obtained a MA in Ethics and Philosophy at Vrije Universiteit Brussels in 2013. Before becoming a researcher he worked as a physician in different humanitarian organizations settings, and as a GP in a community health center in Gent. Dirk obtained his medical degree at Universiteit Gent (Belgium) in 2004.
