Prof. Dr. Inge Arteel
Biography
Inge Arteel is Full Professor of German Literature at the Vrije Universiteit Brussel. She studied German and English Philology at Ghent University and took courses in Austrian Literature at Vienna University. She has been working at the VUB since 1999, first as an FWO PhD candidate and then as a postdoctoral research fellow of the FWO. Her PhD, which she completed in 2004, dealt with Friederike Mayröcker's prose works from the years 1988-1998; it was published by Aisthesis Verlag in 2007. Inge's research topics include contemporary Austrian literature (esp. Mayröcker, Jelinek, and other experimental women authors), Austrian and German theatre, literary theory, gender theory, intermediality, and the radio play. Starting Spring 2022 she supervises, together with Prof. Birgit Van Puymbroeck, an FWO funded senior research project entitled Broadcast Biographies. Innovations in Genre and Medium (1945-2020). Inge is the author of a biography of Friederike Mayröcker (Wehrhahn Verlag 2012). She has published edited volumes and/or articles on Friederike Mayröcker, Elfriede Jelinek, Verena Stefan, Josef Winkler, Marieluise Fleisser, Judith Butler, George Tabori, Peter Weiss and others.
Inge Arteel was head of the department LIST (Linguistics and Literary Studies) in the academic years 2018-19 and 2019-20. She is vice-chair of CLIC, Centre for Literary and Intermedial Crossings, and co- chair of the UGent-VUB research group THALIA. She is an international scientific partner of the Interuniversitärer Forschungsbund Elfriede Jelinek and member of the editorial staff of the academic journal Germanistische Mitteilungen (Winter Verlag). She sporadically translates texts by Elfriede Jelinek or others into Dutch and writes reviews for the
literary review platform De Reactor.
