Our First Rhea Book Club!
We’re kicking off our Gender Lecture Series with a deep dive into Judith Butler’s latest book, Who’s Afraid of Gender?
For this session, we’ll be reading the Introduction and Chapter 5. The Introduction lays the groundwork by contextualising anti-gender ideology and introducing key concepts that frame the rest of the book. Chapter 5 focuses on trans-exclusionary feminism and the broader anti-trans rhetoric—a topic we believe lies at the heart of anti-gender ideology.
This is a great opportunity to familiarise yourself with the book ahead of the Lecture on 3rd March, the first event in our Gender Lecture Series running throughout March.
The book club will be informal—the idea is to create a comfortable space where we can explore topics together, learn from each other, and experiment with ideas. The discussion will be led in English, but please feel free to express yourself in any language you feel comfortable in. We will help each other translate, if needed!
Feeling extra motivated? We encourage you to also read Chapter 9, where Butler delves into how gender ideologies are shaped by colonial and racial legacies. The conclusion gives you a helpful overview of the key takeaways of the book.
This book club is led by RHEA members Dr. Hannelore Van Bavel and Drs. Erinn De Waele.
Registration is free, but mandatory. We hope to see you there!
